Die Technik des Dramas

*Die Technik des Dramas* (1863) can be used as a textbook for playwrights. In the time of historicism, Freytag tried to build on the ancient and classical modern theories of the drama, and drew up a highly schematized and therefore particularly well-understood concept of “drama”. He particularly shaped the idea of the “pyramidal structure” [Freytag’s pyramid – red.] of the action. He expounded the five-act drama as a model and described the sequence of the act as a tension course: I. exposition, II. rising action, III. climax and peripetia, IV. falling action, V. dénouement.
