Dramaturgy at the Magic and the O’Neill: An Interview with Martin Esslin
An interview with scholar and dramaturg Martin Esslin. He was trained as a director at the Reinhardt Seminar in Vienna, and studied English and philosophy at the University of Vienna. After the occupation of Austria by Hitler in 1938, Esslin went to England and joined the BBC in 1940. He worked for the BBC for 37 years, the last 17 as head of the Radio Drama Department. Mr. Esslin retired from the BBC in 1977 and has been Professor of Drama at Starford University since that time. He has also served since 1977 as Dramaturg at the Magic Theater in San Francisco. He is the author of books on Brecht, Pinter, Artaud, and the Theater of the Absurd.
