Preliminary Notes on the German Dramaturg and American Theater

The position of dramaturg in the German theater is an interesting one, for academic as well as practical reasons. The Dramaturg does not exist to any large degree in theaters west of Germany, but rather east of the Rhine in Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Russia, Germany, and the Scandinavian countries. Aside from the purely intellectual interest which one might derive from a study of the position, more attention should be directed to consideration of a Dramaturg in America than is presently the case. The American theater practitioner would do well to think in terms of creating such a job for our emerging repertory theater, and the professor of theater might reflect upon how the university doctoral program could be instrumental in such an endeavor.
